Lettering

Comic lettering is everything on the page that's made of words: text in the ballons, sounds effects, signs, captions. The letterer's function may vary depending on the type of book, but whether it is manga, graphic novel, superhero comic book, the lettering should make for easy reading, working in favor of the story and the art.

I have lettered many of the Spanish editions of American and European comics and Japanese manga for Glènat-Spain, Norma Comics -both big comic publishing houses established in Barcelona- and Astiberri from Bilbao. My job consists of erasing the original foreign lettering (text in/outside of the balloons as well every sound effects -onomatopoeia- in the picture) and replacing it with Spanish.

I use Illustrator and Photoshop for lettering and retouch; InDesign or QuarkX for page layout and Acrobat for pdf files.

Digital Color

I have worked for six years as a colorist assistant for a Spanish colorist at DC and Marvel Comics, Javier Rodriguez. In the beginning I was responsible for the color selections in separated layouts, but after several projects I was also entrusted with executing the lighting and effects of the final color process.

The following sample describes the coloring steps. I start with a black and white page, the second image is the colored page with flat colors in separated layers and it's what I give to the colorist so he can start directly with lighting and effects. The third image shows the colorist final work.
